Health Benefits of Chamomile

By James Penn

Although often found growing as a week on roadsides, or other weed prone locations, chamomile is a wonderful flowering plant that aids in a wide variety of stomach and other conditions.

Stomach aid

Chamomile is perhaps most often associated and used to treat pregnancy related nausea. Taken in tea form, chamomile can help soothe the stomachs of pregnant women and help them function with their daily activities without having to succumb to the nausea. However, chamomile can be effective in treating the upset stomach of just about anyone as well as an aid in treating irritable bowel syndrome.

Sleeping aid

As with stomach ailments, chamomile is often taken in tea form to treat insomnia. Chamomile may also be taken as a supplemental pill or a sachet of chamomile may be placed under the pillow to achieve the desired effect – peaceful sleep.

Chamomile for infants

Chamomile can also be given to teething infants in the form of either drops or of a cool chamomile tea in order to help reduce the pain associated with teething. The soothing properties of the chamomile work best when applied directly to the red gums or affected area. Chamomile capsules are not useful when treating mouth pain and should never be given to infants without consulting a doctor.

Chamomile can also be incorporated into bath time to help relief symptoms associated with diaper rash, chicken pox or eczema. Used in this way, chamomile sooths the rash or affected skin to relief the itchiness or pain.

Safety concerns

Overall, chamomile is a safe herbal supplement. If you have an existing allergy to pollen or specifically, ragweed pollen, you should steer clear or chamomile to ensure that it does not produce an allergic reaction. Those taking blood thinners should also stay clear of chamomile unless otherwise directed by a physician, as it has been known to interact and inhibit the effects of anticoagulants.

Effectiveness of chamomile treatments

Due to chamomile being a natural treatment, limited studies have been done on its effects. However, chamomile has been used for thousands of years in treating these types of symptoms. Through this type of time-tested use, one could say that chamomile has been proven to effectively treat the symptoms mentioned. However, like most herbal remedies, chamomile is a much gentler treatment than any over the counter drug. With this in mind, you can rest assured that you will not be harming yourself with a super-strong manufactured substance or pill. Chamomile is a mild all natural remedy that can produce time-tested results.
